The Centre of Foundation OBRAS is in the South-East of Portugal (see this page for a map).
The general aim of Foundation OBRAS is to provide the space, service, peace and hospitality necessary for effective working on art and science. The contact with the surrounding landscape and culture may provide additional inspiration. Artists and scientists with (emerging) professional standing are eligible for residence. Disciplines include visual arts, architecture, music composition, film/video, writing, dance, drama and science.
Since 2004, OBRAS-Portugal received around 650 artists in residence from around 50 countries. Have a look at this page for their names and projects. The most recent ones are in the newsletter.
OBRAS-Portugal has seven apartments, two cottages, five studios ranging in size from 25 to 200 m2, some music instruments (including piano) and a swimming pool). It can host up to 10 artists at the same time, but we generally accept 5 to 6. The center is open in April-June and August-October.
We also organise, together with the artist, every year some exhibitions, concerts, performances and open studios. For this we co-operate with museums and other cultural organisations in the region. Have a look on "past and upcoming events".
More information is on "an impression" , "info on prices and more" and on "application form".
For if you are interested in more details: have a look at the history of the house, the surrounding nature, megalithic monuments and local climate.
An obvious highlight is marble, both for sculpting and visiting the active and abandoned quarries in the region. Have a look of the marble pages. There you see the sites and some examples of projects by residents.
