Co-operations with Luís Branco

Since 2014 Luís Branco co-operates with Foundation OBRAS. He photographed the work of a number of artists in residence and had collaborative projects. This resulted in exhibitions, videos and a publication. This album gives a photo impression.

Luis Branco made a photo impression of an installation made the Russian artist Dasha Sytnikova in the fortress of Evoramonte. With hundreds of paper tubes she made a helix form that reflects the spiral staircase of the castle. The work investigates the conflicting perceptions of vacuum, emptiness and recognition. Luis Branco produced a video for GMT on the Dutch painter Ingrid Simons. Since 2010 she has annual residencies as she is deeply inspired by the Alentejo landscape. www.ingridsimons.com

Flora Buberle (Switzerland) studies art and architecture. She attempts to find synergism between the two disciplines and deeply disagrees with architects who see art as an ornament that can be added once the architectural object is ready.  During her residency she made small installations with local materials.

In 2015 Luis Branco had an exhibition in the Public Library of Évora, together with the Dutch poet Gerry van der Linden. A selection of photos, poems and small installations were shown, based on their observations in the surroundings. This also resulted in a beautiful booklet with selected works of the two artists: poems and photos that relate to the installations or poems.

Luis Branco is collaborating since 2016 with the US visual artist and performer Sherry Wiggins. In 2017 they exhibited their collaborative work in both Denver (US) and Estremoz (Portugal).Their projects are about human/nature relationships and the Alentejo landscape is generally used as location for the shootings. Luís Branco made portraits of other residents, including Jonathan Roson (Australia), Kimberley Towbridge (USA) and Natalia Perlazi (Colombia).

Luís Branco (Portugal) lives in Lisbon (until recently in Évora). He began his career as a photojournalist at the Jornal Público and was assistant professor at the Portuguese Institute of Photography. Since 2002, Luís Branco works freelance as a photojournalist. In 2015-2020, he was partner with GMT, an Évora-based company that produces films on culture and on institutions.
